Southampton is a small University city situated in the middle of the South Coast of England. It has a population of about 230,000. London is just 75 minutes away by train and you can easily visit other European cities by plane, coach, ferry or train from Southampton. This makes the city an excellent base to explore Britain and the rest of Europe.

The city has a long maritime history which can be relived in its museums and ancient walls. For many years it was the gateway to Britain for the ocean liners and remains the home port for the cruise ship industry.
Its most famous ship was the Titanic. Most of the crew were local people and the city is full of memorials to the ones who died. There is now a Titanic trail, a walk around the city tracing the historical places connected to the ship and its passengers and crew. It is a major centre in Britain for sailing and boat building. Southampton holds an international boat show every September, and is often home to international yachting races.
