Lewis School Diary - March 2007

We've had a mixed month of sunny days and cold days in Southampton, but generally there is the feeling that spring is in the air. The park opposite the school is full of flowers

.

One of our best events this month was a trip to the theatre to see Starlight Express (below). This is a spectacular musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story is set in the future, and it is performed on roller skates!

The teachers also had fun this month, as Paul organised a Staff Mystery Tour. Four teams of staff members had to walk through the countryside in a race to find a mystery location. Suzie's team won!

On 16 March, some staff and students wore comedy red noses for Red Nose Day, a charity event that happens every two years in Britain. Peggy and Paul joined the fun by wearing fancing dress! Read about Red Nose Day on Okey-Dokey

Raquel from Spain took part in a poetry event.

Another important event in Britain was the 200th anniversary of the end of the slave trade. We are very proud that Raquel, who is one of our students, took part in a BBC South poetry competition to celebrate this event. Raquel and about 10 other young poets were on stage, reading poems which they had written about slavery and freedom. Raquel's poem is below.

Ask for Freedom

My arms are tired from so much feeling

lost, I row across an ocean of doubts.

The cuts of dark experience,

barely concealed I head for a new future.

Torments from a life of slavery

and the pain of long drawn-out splinters.

But here, with my burden of memories

I put an end to all harm

Inheritance of blood.

Observing my life sinking slowly

Suddenly I glimpse you and say:

Welcome freedom.
