Lewis School Diary - January 2007

The school has a new look this year, with new artwork and a geochron in our reception area. "What is a geochron?" you may ask. Well, it is a very clever invention that combines a world map and a clock, showing the hours of daylight around the world.

Now you can see what time it is in any country and whether it is day or night. The bell shape in the picture shows you the short hours of daylight in Britain in January, whereas countries in the southern hemisphere such as Argentina and Australia are enjoying longer daylight hours in their summer months.

So now you have no excuse for phoning your friends while they are sleeping - just check the geochron!

Another addition was our new kitchen, installed during the holidays. This will be useful for our parties. You can see it in the background of the photo below, which shows our group of Russian junior students who came to the school for a programme of lessons and activities. You can read more about their stay by visiting our NEW Junior Centres website (yes, everything's new this month!)

Our adult students joined our Russian group for a tour of Southampton's Mayflower Theatre. The theatre is 75 years old and is still very popular today. The Beatles even played there in the 1960s.

On our tour, we had the chance to see parts of the theatre that the public cannot usually see, such as the dressing rooms, the stage, the costumes and props, the lighting and the scenery.

Visit us next month for more news and photos of the school.
