Lewis School Diary - April 2007

What a month! Nearly every day in April was warm and sunny - it felt like June!

Not surprisingly, many of us at the school were in party mood. We had some great social activities this month, including a barbecue party and two trips in the glorious sunshine - one to Salisbury and Stonehenge, and the other to the Dorset Coast. Here are some photos of this month's events.

Ian's cooking was very popular at the barbecue!

Magical Stonehenge.

April was an important month for Southampton, as it was the 95th anniversary of the Titanic disaster. The Titanic had sailed from Southampton on 10 April 1912, on its first and only voyage, before hitting an iceberg and sinking. Around 1,500 people died, including over 500 from Southampton. There was a special service this month to remember the people who lost their lives in the tragedy. See BBC News article.

However, there was also reason for celebration this month as a new cruise ship called at the port. The Liberty of the Seas is the joint largest cruise ship in the world (339m) and there were fireworks to celebrate its arrival. See BBC News article.

Southampton is still the main UK port for cruise ships and is a major centre for shipping, sailing and maritime research. There are many events this year to celebrate the city's connection to the sea. Find out more at www.seacity.co.uk
