Lewis School Diary - October 2006

October is a very autumnal month - the clocks go back one hour, the leaves change colour and we celebrate Halloween. It's a good time to explore England, as the weather is still mild and the autumn scenery is beautiful. This month, we went on trips to London and the New Forest, and on one very busy day we visited Stonehenge, Winchester and Salisbury.

We also introduced some new activities at the school, with an origami class led by Sakiko from Japan, and a regular dance class with Abby, who is both an English teacher and dance instructor. At the end of the month, we dressed up and made 'jack o' lanterns' out of pumpkins for our Halloween Party. This event has a separate page - click here.

The walk in the New Forest was a chance to get close to nature.

The ponies are quite friendly too!

Back at the school, we had an origama class...

One of the highlights of the month was the trip to Stonehenge, Winchester and Salisbury. Stonehenge is possibly the most famous ancient monument in Europe. Built around 3,000BC, no one is entirely sure who built it or why it was built. One theory is that it was used as a temple. Another is that it is an astronomical calendar. Winchester is the former capital of England and not surprisingly it is full of history. Salisbury is a small city with one of England's most beautiful cathedrals.

Despite all the fun, there was some serious work at the school too. Autumn is a popular time for exam courses, and various students began FCE and IELTS classes in preparation for exams in December.

This month, we also increased the number of computers available to our students from 8 to 14 by adding six laptops to the computer room.  We have been aware that lack of computers has been a frustration at busy times and a justifiable cause of complaint.  We hope this will help to solve that problem and enhance the service we offer.
