The English Experience - September 2006

We’ve really enjoyed running ‘The English Experience’ again this year. This is a collaboration with a school in Switzerland, which sends over a group of students to research a project comparing British and Swiss lifestyles for one week.

This year the projects were ‘Youth in Southampton’, ‘Grammar Schools’, ‘Student Life’ and ‘Food’. We organised visits for the groups, including one to a top grammar school in nearby Bournemouth, a youth club here in Southampton, the Solent University Freshers’ Fair and a local ‘gastropub’ renowned for its traditional (and tasty!) English cooking.

It wasn’t all work, work, work though. On Wednesday, the group spent the day in London and took in a show (‘Billy Elliot’) in the evening.

At the end of the week, the groups made their presentations in front of each other, their group leaders and Richard (our Academic Administrator); each presentation was followed by questions and a discussion. Richard said, “Once again, the standard of English has been outstanding and the initiative shown by the students really impressive.”

Thanks to group leaders Rahel and Beatrice! Look forward to next year!
