The English Experience - September 2005

In late September we welcomed a group of twelve teenagers from Switzerland who came here to take part in a one-week project called 'The English Experience.'

The group arrived on Saturday 24 with their teachers Maurice, Rahel and Rosemary and began work on Monday. The aim of the projects was to research different aspects of English culture and present their findings to the class at the end of the week.

Richard led a planning session on Monday and on the following days the group went on visits throughout the city to conduct interviews and vox-pops.  For example, one group visited a care home to interview elderly people; a second group went to a local pub/restaurant to sample traditional English cuisine; and another group spent a full day at an independent secondary school, where they interviewed the deputy head.

Rahel, Fiorenza and Dominique.

On Friday, the group made presentations in front of their classmates on the subjects of English food, the UK music industry, education, past and present traditions, and whether the English are satisfied with their lives.

The experience was both educational and great fun!
