As part of our introductory tour of Southampton, we visited the old city walls. Southampton's walls have a long history. The Bargate (middle) was the old entrance to the city and was built by the Normans in the 11th century. The Viking boat (left) commemorates the Danish vikings that inhabited the city before that. Much of the walls were destroyed during World War 2, but some parts have survived and add a lot of character to the city.
