Cricket - Thurs 29 July 2004

For our sports activity today, we decided to offer a little cultural education.  For many of you, this was your first opportunity to play the English sport that most countries don't understand.  Yes, that's right - cricket!

First, a quick lesson:

The batsman (Piotr) has to hit the ball with the bat.  Not bad, there, Piotr, but the bat should be a little more vertical... and you definitely shouldn't wear a USA t-shirt when playing cricket!

The bowler (Peter) has to bowl the ball (not throw it!) and try to hit the wicket (the wooden posts).  If the batsman misses the ball, he could be out 'leg before wicket' and if he hits it, he can be caught out, like baseball.

Points (called 'runs') are scored by the two batsman running between the two wickets...

... but if you're not quick enough, you can be 'run out'.  Be careful, Wataru!

Wataru has scored a run, and is turning around for a second run!

Peter bowls.  The ball flies through the air.

Great shot!

Wojtek bowls.  This looks good!

Quiiiiick!!!
